ACDC Bio

Of all the best known hard rock bands, ACDC holds a special place in fans' hearts. Their signature power driven rock and roll and screaming vocals set the standard for rockers in the 1970s and early '80s. Heavily based on power chords, the band's music is also prized by fans for lyrics filled with double entendres and sexual innuendo. An Australian import, the group originally formed around 1971, but it wouldn't be until 1976 that they'd achieve world-wide fame.

The Lineup

ACDC has had a number of members file through the band over the years. However, the classic lineups have included founding brothers Angus and Malcolm Young on lead and rhythm, Phil Rudd on drums, and turns by bassists Mark Evans and Cliff Williams. Lead singer Bon Scott was with the band through their breakthrough years, and set the tone for the band. Promoted from maladjusted tour bus driver to front man in a single night, Scott gave ACDC a reputation for wild, crazy fun that lasts until this day. Tragically, Scott died from alcohol poisoning in 1980. There was speculation that the band would dissolve, but the Young brothers decided to search for a new lead singer, and this eventually lead to Scott sound alike Brian Johnson.

Bon Scott may have set the band's image, but he wasn't the only standout in the group. Angus Young, just 15 years old at the time ACDC formed, became very well recognized for his perennial school boy uniform and stage antics. Not all flash, Angus also had a lot of substance and dominated the band's sound with his power guitar playing.

Albums/CDs

ACDC has made a lot of music over the years, but a number of classics stand out. Arguably, the band's best work was completed by 1981, followed by a string of lesser recordings that failed to live up to critical expectations. Among ACDC's best albums are:

  • High Voltage (1976) - A "made for the USA" compilation of tunes from their debut album of the same name and follow up T.N.T.
  • Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (1976)
  • Let There Be Rock (1977)
  • Powerage (1978)
  • Highway to Hell (1979)
  • Back in Black (1980) - The first recording featuring Brian Johnson
  • For Those About to Rock We Salute You (1981)
