Why Build a Guitar With Bass Guitar Plans?

There are many reasons why someone would want to build his or her own bass guitar. First of all, the project itself can be a lot of fun. The process of routing out the body and finishing the wood gives the guitar builder a very deep connection to the instrument once it is finished. When you build your own instrument, you can also make decisions that allow you to really personalize how the bass looks and sounds, so that the finished instrument is truly unique and a reflection of your personality. In some instances, you can even save yourself some money when you do your own labor, although this should probably not be your main inspiration for finding bass guitar plans.

Where to Find Plans

Check out these websites to find a wide variety of bass guitar plans.

  • Music Instrument Makers Forum] – The Music Instrument Makers Forum is a fantastic site for anyone thinking of building his or her own instrument. In addition to plans for various acoustic and electric guitars, lap steels, dulcimers and ukuleles, they have various plans for bass guitars. You can build a four, five or six-string solid body thru-neck bass, a jazz bass or a standard four-string fretted bolt on electric bass. The plans are affordable, and they are printed full size on large sheets of paper.
  • Tinozza Acoustic Bass Guitar – The plans for this Tinizza acoustic bass guitar are provided at an excellent website for the luthier Liutaio Mottola. Acoustic bass guitars have become much more popular in recent years since shows like MTV Unplugged have shown how great this type of bass can sound. This page has some great general information on acoustic basses as well as plans to build the stunning Tinozza Acoustic Bass. The plans can be downloaded in large format files if you have access to a large format printer, or they can be downloaded in smaller files for standard printers and then assembled into large-scale plans.
  • Buzzards Bass Shop – Buzzards Bass Shop in Plymouth, Massachusetts sells complete plans for building a replica Fender Precision bass guitar. The plans are for a guitar with a 34-inch scale fretboard with twenty frets. These plans are complete and cover all aspects of the construction of the bass.
  • Sit-Down Bass – Michael Stridsberg designed and built a custom electric bass that is intended for optimum comfort when the bass player is playing sitting down. This site covers absolutely every stage in the process, from heading to the lumberyard to cutting, routing, finishing, assembling and even playing the bass! Even if you don't want to build this particular bass, this site has incredibly valuable information for anyone considering building his or her own instrument.
  • Mezzaluna Electric Bass – This incredible looking bass is a solid body instrument with a half-moon shape. Liutaio Mottola has plans for different sizes: a regular bass, a piccolo (small) bass, and a piccolino (tiny) bass. These smaller basses have been used in all-bass ensembles to provide a slightly different tone than a standard bass. The Mezzaluna line is without a doubt a very intriguing group of bass guitars.
  • Randy Cordle – Randy Cordle's site has some detailed plans available free of charge for a very cool looking electric bass. The files can be printed out on standard paper and assembled to create the full-scale plans.

Take Your Time

These projects are now easy, and should be labors of love. Don't undertake a bass building project unless you have the time and patience to really enjoy the process. When you approach the project this way, you will enjoy all the ups and downs and will end up with a better instrument in the end.

Hi Ralf - Check out the link to the Music Instrument Makers Forum in the above article. They would be a great place to start, and I believe they have a plan for a basic five string Fender bass. Good luck.
