From Cat Stevens to Yusuf Islam

Born Steven Demetre Georgiou in 1948 London, Cat Stevens was a pop sensation in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Songs such as The First Cut and Wild World propelled him into the spotlight, and his songwriting abilities were well-known and touted.

After a near-drowning in 1975, Cat Stevens began to seek religious and spiritual truths. Subsequently, he converted to the Muslim religion in 1977, changing his name to Yusuf Islam in 1978. Due to his interpretations of how his new religion viewed pop music, the former Cat Stevens left his life in the musical spotlight behind.

Years later, Yusuf Islam returned to the world of music with new songs, some of which were dedicated to teaching children about Islam. He eventually ventured into the world of pop music again, performing in English for the first time in decades.
