What Does a Chord Chart Do For You?

A chord chart is the ultimate resource for guitarists of all levels. It is so important because it gives players the complete vocabulary needed to create music on the guitar. A beginning player will likely work with the major open position chords until they are memorized before moving on to playing those same chords in other positions up the neck. After the major chords are mastered, players typically move on to minor chords followed by seventh chords, ninth chords and so on.

Depending on the style of music you play, your familiarity with the more complicated chords, like suspended chords, sixth chords, thirteenth chords, etc., will likely vary. You can be a very successful, creative and accomplished guitarist without having memorized all the possible chords the guitar can play. If you ever run across a need to play a chord you don't know, you can always consult your downloadable guitar chord chart to refresh your memory. If you have a great chord chart handy, it will actually give your playing more confidence because you will never be in a situation where you can't figure out how to play a particular chord.

Where to Find a Good Downloadable Guitar Chord Chart

The following websites provide chord charts that can be downloaded, printed out and used to improve and increase your chords repetoire. It is suggested that you print out a copy, and keep it in your guitar case so you have it with you wherever you go. You should also keep a copy of the electronic file on your computer in case you lose the copy you printed out so you can always quickly retrieve the original file and print out another copy.

Download, Print, Practice

Some guitar players who love to practice will spend hours dedicated to learning chords in a rote memory style. Like you practiced spelling in grade school, these players might make flash cards with chord names on them so they can quiz themselves randomly. While this technique will lead to results over time, a more efficient (not to mention more enjoyable) way to learn chords is through the music that you play. When you encounter a new song that uses a chord you don't know, look it up. Once you learn the song well, you will internalize that chord and it will then become a part of your vocabulary. Over time, you will run into many different songs that use many different chords, and you will be surprised at how thoroughly your chord vocabulary will develop.
