Free Easy Guitar Sheet Music

From LoveToKnow Guitar

When learning guitar and music theory, it is helpful to call on any resources available, especially free easy guitar sheet music. Although there is an abundance of information available on the Internet with regards to music written in guitar tabs, the resources for guitar sheet music are not that plentiful. It will often take a good attentive and exhaustive search on the Internet to find the kind of free easy guitar sheet music that guitar players, particularly beginning guitar players, have a desire to play.

Sheet Music

There are a few ways to learn music for the guitar:

  • Playing by ear, where a musician plays music based on a memory of what they hear.
  • Playing by guitar tabs, where a musician reads the special notation system called guitar tablature to learn the music.
  • Playing by sheet music, which is the more traditional way to learn musical pieces, not only for guitar, but for other instruments as well.

How to Read Free Easy Guitar Sheet Music

When looking to learn musical tunes from guitar sheet music, it helps to be familiar with some of the shorthand notation that comes with the territory. Most guitar players are familiar with the tricks and symbols of tablature. However, sheet music for guitars has its own set of notations that make it easier to read. These will need to be learned in order to play the pieces as faithfully as possible. Some of the notation is as follows:

  • P-I-M-A – this is the notation for the fingering on the right hand for picking the strings. P is the thumb, I is the index finger, M is the middle finger and A is the third finger
  • I, II, III, IV, etc. – these Roman numerals indicate the position of the chords, whether in first position, second position, etc.
  • Sharps and flats – the symbols “#” for sharp notes and “b” for flat notes show the player what key the song is in, and can indicate when there is a subsequent change of key. Locate these symbols on the staff lines at the left side, just after the treble or bass clef.

Advantages of Sheet Music Over Tablature

Although tablature makes learning a piece of guitar music much easier than learning by ear or using sheet music, there are a number of advantages to using free easy guitar sheet music that tablatures lack. However, that’s not to say that tablature doesn’t have its advantages. Tablature can show the guitar player exactly what frets to play on a piece of music. This can be important if a particular guitar phrase has a tonality that can’t be found on certain strings – the wound strings of the bottom three strings might be able to sound the same note as one of the three higher strings. However, the timbre of the note will be much different.

Tablature is also particularly good for the fingerings required for chords, particularly for the more complex chords. For those guitar players who play in special tunings, each individual string will have its new tuning named at the beginning of the tablature. On the other hand, sheet music has several advantages over tablature, which can be quite important when playing. For example:

  • Sheet music, and the notes represented on the sheet, can display the kind of dynamics and a subtlety in playing that tablature is not able to represent.
  • Sheet music shows the rhythmic requirements of a piece very accurately, whilst tablature lacks this ability.
  • It is possible to sight-read and therefore sight-play a piece of music written in sheet notation. This is not possible with tablature.
  • Sheet music transfers to piano quite easily and readily. This is not an easy process with tablature.

Sources of Guitar Sheet Music

Although there are probably more avenues to exposure to free guitar tablature, that is not to say that there is no guitar sheet music available online. Several resources offer sheet music for guitar, for all levels of playing. Some instances of freely available guitar sheet music are:

There are many more resources for guitar sheet music. Some require some research to find, but all of them are available and easy to play. The only thing that the guitar player has to add, then, is dedication and plenty of practice.
