Where to Find Free Guitar Notes
When guitar players say they are looking for guitar notes, what they usually mean is they are looking for how notes are arranged into songs. There are two ways in which notes are arranged to create music: single-note melodies and chords.
Single-Note Melodies
Single-note melodies are exactly what they sound like they are. Guitar players can create melodies by arranging notes on the guitar one at a time. Sometimes the melodies played on the guitar follow a song's vocal melody. If there is a particularly catchy melody that is sung during a song's chorus, a guitar player will often play the same melody on the guitar during the song's instrumental break. Other times, guitar players create a unique single note melody that is repeated several times throughout the song. This is called a "tag line". A famous example of a single note tag line melody can be heard in the Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's song, Breakdown. The guitar part that is played over the introduction of the song is a perfect example of a tag line. Another guitar player that successfully uses tag line melodies in his playing is Noel Gallagher from the British rock band Oasis.
Chords
The most common way of using guitar notes to create songs is by arranging the notes into chords. Chords are essentially a grouping of three or more notes that are played at the same time. Depending on how the notes are arranged, chords can have different sounds and feelings. Major chords produce a happy sound and feel resolved. Minor chords sound darker and tend to feel sad. Seventh chords are full of tension and love to be resolved to major chords. Nine chords are very warm and rich, and they are often used in jazz songs. There are many different types of chords that guitar players use to create various types of music. The following free websites show how guitar notes are arranged into chords.
