Spotlight on John Deacon

It's impossible to discuss Queen bass tabs without delving a little deeper into the life of John Deacon, famed Queen bass player. Deacon was responsible for some incredible bass lines that have become deeply rooted in the public consciousness.

John Deacon
Band: Queen
Essential Albums: A Night at the Opera (1975), A Day at the Races (1976), Jazz (1978), The Game (1980)
Hit Songs: Under Pressure, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Bohemian Rhapsody
Website: John Deacon Fan Site

John Deacon was the last to join the classic Queen line-up, and if you've followed the band over the years, you may already know that he is a rather shy individual. This may seem a bit odd for a rock star, but then Freddie Mercury was flamboyant enough to carry the stage performances and let the rest of Queen concentrate on making great music. Deacon's bass playing was always solid, but he didn't gain the confidence to write any songs for the band until Queen's third album, Sheer Heart Attack was being recorded. His first song, Misfire, was good enough to make it onto the final cut of the album, but it wasn't a standout song by any measure. Still, Queen was always a very democratic band, and Deacon's contributions and opinions were always encouraged and welcomed.

Deacon began to come into his own as a songwriter on the band's next album, A Night At the Opera. The song You're My Best Friend became the band's second hit single from the album, following the outrageously popular Bohemian Rhapsody. Deacon would follow that hit up with several more over the years, including the now indispensable stadium chant, We Will Rock You, from the album titled The Game. This album also produced the bass line that inspired many a young musician to pick up a bass and try to imitate Deacon's licks on the classic hit Another One Bites the Dust.

Although John Deacon has retired from the music business, his music tours on with Queen. Now it's time to check out those bass tabs.
