The Led Zeppelin Story

Led Zeppelin was formed in the late 1960s in England and featured guitarist Jimmy Page, vocalist Robert Plant, drummer John Bonham and bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones. The group's early music was steeped in the blues and featured many classic blues riffs played with heavily distorted guitars. Because of these heavy guitar riffs, Plant's high pitched vocal stylings and Bonham's heavy on the backbeat drum beats, Led Zeppelin is often considered one of the first heavy metal bands. This label, however, is completely inadequate to account for the myriad of genres that Led Zeppelin experimented with in their nine album, thirteen-year career. Over a third of Led Zeppelin's music is acoustic, drawing from country, folk, Celtic, Irish and acoustic blues music. Their third album appropriately titled Led Zeppelin III is almost entirely composed of acoustic songs. Later records like Physical Graffiti and In Through the Out Door saw the band dabbling in keyboards, psychedelic textures and dance grooves that borrowed from reggae and disco. When you approach Led Zeppelin as a guitar player, it is natural to start with the heavier, guitar laden material of the first two records, but in order to truly appreciate the genius that was this band, you need to graduate to the study of the more experimental aspects of their musicianship and songwriting.
