Metallica Tabs
From LoveToKnow Guitar
Metallica tabs are invaluable for guitar playing fans of this amazing hard rock band. If Elvis was The King of rock-n-roll, and The Beatles took rock-n-roll from the blues on a trip across the universe, Metallica took heavy metal into the 21st century.
A Brief Look at Metallica's Career
Picking up the metal baton from Black Sabbath and Metallica, along with other thrash metal bands like Slayer, Venom, Megadeath and Anthrax, Metallica started a new movement playing a faster, darker, heavier style of hard rock with incredible technical proficiency. While many of the aforementioned bands left indelible marks on the thrash metal scene, Metallica alone has achieved true iconic status. Their earliest records, 1983's Kill 'Em All and 1984's Ride the Lightening, laid the groundwork for their colossal rise. Stripped down, dark, complex, and nothing like the commercial sound at the time, these records are seen by many as the core of Metallica's catalogue. Master of Puppets, released in 1986, was the first of the band's records to go gold. Metallica's popularity continued to climb in 1988 with the release of … And Justice for All, a record that quickly went platinum and featured the band's first commercial hit single for the song One.
Everything changed for Metallica in 1990, however, with the release of their self-titled fifth record. The band considerably changed its approach to songwriting and recording on this record, and the results were astonishing. Metallica has gone platinum 15 times and is the most popular heavy metal album of all time. The band continued down this more commercial road for their next two records, Load and Re-Load in 1996 and 1997. In 2003, many fans and critics saw their next release St. Anger as uneven and not the band's best work, although the record still sold millions of copies.
2008 has seen Metallica return to its roots with the record Death Magnetic. Their first CD recorded with the famous producer Rick Rubin, Death Magnetic has been seen by critics and fans as a creative rebirth for the band.
Where to Find Metallica Tabs Online
- xGuitar: The tab site xGuitar does a fine job of organizing Metallica tabs by record. Fans of the earlier, more garage-oriented material of their first four records (plus the re-released Garage Days Re-Revisited) can easily find their favorites. Those who love Metallica's more popular material of the early 1990s and beyond can also get right to what they're looking for. Another interesting aspect of xGuitar's site is their top 20 ranking of the most popular Metallica tabs.
- Guitare Tab: Another fine website for Metallica tabs is Guitare Tab. Users post versions of tabs to this site that can be both a positive and a negative in some ways. The positive is that you have more information to look at when you are trying to figure out how to play a particular song. For example, there are currently ten versions of Nothing Else Matters listed on the site. The negative is that not all tab versions are accurate. To help you deal with this issue, Guitare Tab lets users rank versions of tabs to help players help each other find the good stuff quickly!
- FretPlay: Complete, accurate and free is FretPlay's motto, and they don't disappoint. A very extensive collection of Metallica tabs is available free of charge at FretPlay. In addition, the site features a list of bass tabs for Metallica songs that is almost as extensive as the guitar tabs list. This is good news for the often forgotten bassist out there.
Print Resources
If you are a Metallica fan and want to find books of Metallica tabs, you are in luck. Arguably, no other major band has as much of their catalogue available in tab books. A check at Amazon.com shows that every Metallica album has a corresponding tab book available for it. In addition, collections of Metallica songs are available in "best of" types of books. If there's a Metallica song you want to find, you can certainly find it in print form.
