Where to Find an Online Guitar Chord Chart
There are two main ways to find guitar chord charts online. The first is to find websites that have chord generators, and the second is to find a program that can connect you to great chord resources.
Website Generators
- Looknohands.com features an easy to use generator that may take a bit to get used to. On the right hand side are several pull-down menus, one for each chord grouping. All that users need to do is pull down and select whichever chord they are looking to find. For example, if you're looking for E7, you should pull down the "E Chords" menu to find that chord and select it. When a chord is selected, it will appear on the left side. Users even have the option to click a button and hear the chord.
- Chordbook.com features an aesthetically pleasing chord generator. Similar to the above generator, users only need to select which chord they are looking for to have it appear on the virtual guitar. You can also hear the chord played. However, you can only hear each string of the chord hit separately; the site does not offer an option to hear the full chord played at once.
- Chords.kytara.cz is a simple generator meant to serve all your needs.
- All Guitar Chords is another great generator online.
- Chorderator.com features chord charts for all instruments that have strings.
Programs
There are many online guitar chord chart programs that you can find to help you. Many of them connect to the Internet to give you up-to-date information.
- Guitar Chord Crash Course 3/4 is a Windows based application that helps users learn chords. Users can look a chord up by several different factors. However, users who are already used to chord charts that illustrate chords in a vertical fashion should be aware that this program (like several others) shows chords horizontally.
- Guitar Alchemist is a music teaching software program. While the program is geared more towards learning guitar, the chord charts that the program creates are illustrated in an easy to understand manner. Users can also see where a chord can be played on any combination of frets. Guitar Chord Trainer is a similar program that runs on Mac OS.
- Guitar Chord is a freeware program that allows users to both save and print any chords they please.
- One Billion Chords is a giant Windows based chord directory. Users can search for chords in any manner that they like. This program will also transpose any chord to another position on the neck so users can easily see how to change one chord into a similar chord.
- Guitar Chords 2.1 is a great program that allows users to easily view chords. The program even illustrates chords using a real guitar and is easy to navigate.
- Guitar Chords Database is another program loaded with thousands of chords.
- Virtual Fretboard is an easy-to-use visual representation of the chords.
Widgets
For Mac OS users, there is a simple Dashboard widget that can help you find chords easily. Chord Reference is an easy widget to help users find chord information quickly. For Linux and Windows users, there is also Chord Reference Finder that serves the same purpose.

Hi Steve- An E5 chord is also referred to as an E barre chord. To play one is very simple. There are only three notes: the low E string played open, the A string fretted at the second fret, and the D string fretted at the second fret. You only play the low three strings of your guitar. Hope that helps! Thanks for stopping by.
