ZZ Top

Behind the Beards

ZZ Top's career started in 1969 in Houston, and the band originally featured a straight up blues sound. Their first two records were not commercially successful, and it wasn't until the band's third album, Tres Hombres in 1973, that the band got their first official hit with the song La Grange. The band's success seemed to plateau through the rest of the 1970s as they released several records and played to enthusiastic audiences, but little did the world know that ZZ Top would soon adopt a new sound and a new look that would make them one of the most popular bands in the world.

In 1983 ZZ Top released Eliminator, their most successful album to date. The record featured a completely revamped sound with synthesizers and more pop oriented songwriting. This approach contrasted with the bands earlier, more blues oriented past records, but the results speak for themselves. The album's major hits Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, and Gimme All Your Lovin', along with their accompanying videos, helped propel ZZ Top to the highest reaches of the pop music stratosphere. The follow up, Afterburner, continued where Eliminator left off with the hit singles Sleeping Bag, Velcro Fly, and Rough Boy and helped cement ZZ Top as one of the most successful and distinguished bands of the 1980s.

Where to Find ZZ Top Tabs Online

Whether you're a fan of Billy Gibbon's guitar licks or Dusty Hill's heat pounding bass lines, you can find the tabs you need from the list below.

Guitar

  • Ultimate Guitar: Ultimate Guitar features a healthy collection of tabs for ZZ Top's best hits and some of their lesser known gems like Dust My Broom, I Got the Six, Jesus Just Left Chicago, and Give It Up. Ultimate Guitar allows users to post their own transcriptions of songs, so some versions are more accurate than others. One tool they use to help you save time is a five-star rating system where guitarists can praise the best transcriptions and scorn those that are not so great.
  • X Guitar: X Guitar organizes their tabs in a creative way. They first list all the band's albums (16 in the case of ZZ Top), and then list how many tabs they have for each album. This system might be helpful if you know which record has your favorite songs on it, but you're not sure exactly what those songs are called.
  • Guitar Masta: Guitar Masta is a well-organized and very clean website with a welcoming interface. The top 10 ZZ Top songs are listed at the top of the page, and users can browse by either album or song. One nice touch is that the album view features the album artwork, so you can recognize your favorite record by its cover.

Bass

  • Bass Masta: The companion site to Guitar Masta, Bass Masta is organized in the same effective way as the guitar version; it's just oriented towards the bass player. All the tabs here are for four string players only. Interestingly, La Grange is the top ZZ Top bass tab as well as the top ZZ Top guitar tab.
  • FretPlay: FretPlay is a guitar and bass site with an excellent list of tabs for both instruments. Their bass collection features Gimme All Your Lovin', La Grange, Lowrider, Sharp Dressed Man, and Tush.
  • AZ Chords: Another site that serves both the guitarist and the bassist, AZ Chords has a substantial list of tabs for both instruments. More tabs are added regularly, so check back often and see if the collection has grown.

Put Together a Power Trio

The beauty of ZZ Top for the budding guitarist is that only three people make their music. That means, if you're a guitarist and you know a bassist and a drummer, you're ready to put some of these songs to work. Just dust off your cheap sunglasses, and make sure you keep your beard combed!.

Comments

I don't know of any ZZ Top tunes specifically rewritten for acoustic guitar. Of course, you could always try to rework some of the electric tabs in a way that works for the acoustic, but this will be easier for some songs than others. Sometimes country or bluegrass bands will rework an artist's catalog in an acoustic format, but I'm unaware of anything like this for ZZ Top. Keep your eyes peeled, however. These sites are constantly updated, so anything is possible.
